Luxul Switches Get Self-Healing

Luxul announces "self-healing" capability for some of their managed network switches. Available via free upgrade to firmware version 4.1.1 or greater, the functionality adds two features: auto-recovery and power scheduling.

Luxul is the supplier of simple-to-deploy, professional-grade IP networking solutions for residential and commercial environments.

Mike Grubb, VP Marketing at Luxul, says, “Imagine never getting another call about security cameras or other PoE-connected devices freezing up; your clients’ switches will take care of them automatically. ARM Uses Treasure for IoT Management

ARM has a pair of Internet of Things (IoT) related announcements-- the acquisition of data management leader Treasure Data and the launch of Pelion, an IoT platform bringing together a number of ARM technologies

Financial details of the deal are not available, but Bloomberg puts the value of Treasure Data at around $600 million.

Treasure Data is a specialist in crunching the large amounts of data generated by devices making the IoT, as well as data from CRM, e-commerce systems and other 3rd party services. The acquisition follows that of connectivity management vendor Stream, and combined with ARM Mbed Cloud technology it makes what ARM calls "the final piece of our IoT enablement puzzle."

SolarWinds Updates Network Management Line

The SolarWinds network management product line gets a range of updates, including support for networks up to x4 larger than the previous generation, making it easier for admins to consolidate solutions enterprise-wise.

The updates also promise more flexibility when scaling up and supporting larger datacentre networks or when networks or when sclaing out to address complex distributed networks. SolarWind points out three "breakthrough" additions, being the aforementioned x4 increase in monitoring capacity, intelligent auto-generating and contextually-aware maps (enable faster and clearer network performance visualisation) and Cisco Nexus support for Network Insight.

Cloudflare Promises Privacy With 1.1.1.1 DNS Service

As customers look to improve their internet experience Cloudflare presents the 1.1.1.1 Domain Name System (DNS) resolver, a freely available service promising to both secure and accelerate online traffic.

For the unfamiliar, a DNS resolver "resolves" (or connects) IP addresses to domain names. Most consumers get DNS resolutions as part of the standard ISP package. The process is surprisngly lengthy, with an average DNS lookup taking around 32 milliseconds. As such some companies offer an own fast DNS service, such as Cisco OpenDNS and Google DNS.

Developed in partnership with APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) Labs, the 1.1.1.1 service is superior because it runs on the Cloudflare global anycast network powered by 149 datacentres across the world. Thus, the company claims, the DNS is faster than any alternative, including 8.8.8.8 from Google.
