Gartner: IoT Requires Network Access Policy Change

According to Gartner the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in use globally will reach 21 billion by 2010-- bringing about an opportunity in network policy updates handling such an onslaught.

"Having embraced a bring-your-own-device strategy, organizations must now get employee devices on the enterprise network and start addressing the 21bn IoT devices that we project will want access to the enterprise network," the analyst says. "Whether a video surveillance camera for a parking lot, a motion detector in a conference room or the HVAC for the entire building, the ability to identify, secure and isolate all IoT devices-- and in particular "headless" devices-- is more difficult to manage and secure.

The command and control room and public safety answering point (PSAP) market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.1% from $5.4 billion in 2015 to reach $7.6 billion in 2020, according to IHS Markit.

Midokura Boosts MEM OpenStack Capabilities

The latest release of the Midokura Enterprise MidoNet (MEM) software-defined networking (SDN) solution features the ability to connect multiple OpenStack-based clouds, as well as container platform support.

“Enterprise organisations across the globe continue to adopt Midokura’s network virtualization solution to make cloud adoption easier and to retain a tight grip over their networks and applications,” the company says. “Our latest iteration of the MEM technology is designed to address real market needs, including the ability to connect multiple OpenStack clouds and support the containers movement.”

MEM router peering handles overlay connectivity between multiple OpenStack deployments via VXLAN tunneling. The result, the company says, is direct connectivity between multiple sites without need for constant backup procedures, as well as a reduction in control traffic and broadcast storms across multiple sites.
