Lenovo Aims ThinkSystem Products at Datacentre

Lenovo presents its largest datacentre product portfolio yet at Tech World Transform 2017-- one replete with servers, switches, SAN arrays and converged systems, in a showing the company is serious about enterprise.

The product launch represents the first major refresh of Lenovo enterprise product lines since the company acquired the IBM x86 server business back in 2014. It is also the first product launch for the Lenovo Data Center Group, following its creation back in April.

New Lenovo servers include the ThinkSystem SR950, designed for mission-critical workloads such as in-memory databases, large transactional databases, real-time analytics, ERP and CRM systems, and virtualised server workloads. It comes in a 4U form factor, and is scalable from 2 to 8 processors.

Cisco Presents Intent-Based Networking

Cisco Presents Intent-Based Networking

Cisco announces what it claims is one of the "most significant breakthroughs in enterprise networking"-- intent-based networking, a system able to anticipate actions, stop threats and, ultimately, "evolve and learn."

The principle behind intent-based networking is similar to self-driving vehicles. Whereas a traditional network requires an administrator managing of multiple tasks, an intent-based network can determine how to do a task, before automating specific tasks to make it happen.

Such a system involves a shift from hardware-centric to software-driven networking, making an intelligent, secure platform "powered by intent and informed by context." Behind the intuitive network is Digital Network Architecture (DNA), a suite of technologies and services running as a single system.

Aruba Presents Core Switch

Aruba Networks presents clear take on the Cisco Catalyst network switch line-- the Aruba 8400 Core Switch series, running on what what the company claims is the most advanced operating system, ArubaOS-CX.

Promising to take a leap from "antiquated switching platforms," the 8400 is designed for mobility, cloud and IoT applications. It offers "carrier-class" performance, with immediate availability, better insights into troubleshooting and easier automation through a fully extensible fabric design. The Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) with two chassis scales up to 512 10GbE, 128 40Gbe or 96 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Powering the 8400 is ArubaOS-CX-- a new operating system able to automate and simplify many critical and complex network tasks. It offers automated visibility via Aruba Network Analytics Engine (NAE), faster resultion with Network Insights, and a built-in Python interpreter and REST-based APIs for full programmability and easy integration with infrastructure and applications.

IDC: Sharp Q1 2017 Decline for Servers in W. Europe

IDC reports the W. European server market down by -14.3% Y-o-Y in Q1 2017-- in contrast with CEE, the region showing the fastest growth at 7.2% Y-o-Y.

On a global basis, the Q1 2017 server market is also on the decline, specifically by -4.6% Y-o-Y to $11.8 billion. Causing such slowdown is hyperscale services providers waiting until H2 2017 for the deployment of Intel Skylake processors, while high-end server sales remain a "drag" on overall market performance. Another factor negatively affecting the market is DRAM prices.

Server shipments are actually the rise-- by 1.4% Y-o-Y to 2.21 million, with one customer accounting for over 10% of servers shipped during the quarter.

Volume server revenues are down by -3.4% Y-o-Y to $9.5bn, while midrange server revenues show 16.5% Y-o-Y to $1.3bn. High-end systems revenues drop by -29% Y-o-Y to $1bn, and the analyst expects long-term secular declines in high-end system revenue.

Iceotope Intros Portable Edge Server

UK-based IT systems maker Iceotope presents the EdgeStation-- a portable edge computing module with a built-in liquid cooling system designed for challenging environments.

Usable as either a workstation or a micro datacentre, the EdgeStation is a sealed liquid cooling system. The electronics are immersed in dielectric fluid, making a virtually silent system with no fans or other air cooling equipment. The casing is IP54-rated for resistance to extreme heat, humidity and dust, while built-in wheels make it portable.

EdgeStation systems are user-configurable, with the system able to accommodate up to two server-class CPUs, up to two expandable PCIe devices and up to 16 DIMMs per server. Iceotope also offers some off-the-shelf stock with 2.2GHz Intel Xeon processors and 256GB RAM.
