"Mixed" Q1 for Enternet Switches, Routers

E-mail Print PDF

IDC reports "mixed results" for the global Q1 2013 ethernet switch (Layer 2/3) and router markets, with switch revenues growing by 2.1% Y-o-Y to $5.28 billion and routers dropping by -7.3% Y-o-Y.

W. Europe remains "an area of weakness" for ethernet switches-- Q1 2013 declines total -6.2% Y-o-Y, even if this is an improvement over the double-digit Y-o-Y declines seen during Q3 and Q4 2012.

In contrast, C. and European growth reaches 10.3% Y-o-Y.

"While 10GbE continues to drive the worldwide ethernet switch market, it is interesting to note the increasing divergence in the performance of the overall market across the various regions, and in some cases, specific countries," IDC says. "While GbE is still expected to hold its own for the foreseeable future, we expect 10GbE and 40GbE to drive the wired infrastructure market forward in the coming years, both in the datacenter as well as campus core deployments. But as the market evolves, we should expect there will be pronounced market differences across the various theatres." Read more...

IDC: Q1 WLAN Market

The global WLAN market (combining both consumer and enterprise segments) grows by 12.5% Y-o-Y during Q1 2013 IDC reports, making for another positive quarter for the industry.

The enterprise segment shows the strongest growth during the period-- 19.3% Y-o-Y. According to the analyst Q1 2013 is the 13th consecutive quarter with annual enterprise growth reaching over 15%.

The consumer WLAN market is also healthy, with Q1 2013 growth reaching 6.2% Y-o-Y.

"The explosion of mobile devices and the uptake of enterprise mobility applications continue to be top of mind for enterprise IT in terms of driving WLAN infrastructure growth across a wide range of enterprise verticals and use cases," IDC remarks. "While Q1 2013 saw some slowing of growth in wifi infrastructure rollouts for mobile offload applications, the longer term trend of cellular operators and managed service providers leveraging wifi stays intact and will continue to boost additional growth in the coming years." Gartner: Q1 2013 Remains a Challenge in Servers

EMEA server shipments and revenues continue to fall during Q1 2013, Gartner reports-- shipments total 580000 units with a -6.8% Y-o-Y decline, while revenues drop by -9.6% to $2.96bn, with contractions across all EMEA regions.

"Following a challenging 2012, 2013 started in very much the same way," the analyst remarks. "Budgets are restricted and server infrastructure spending is clearly not the highest priority for many organizations."

Revenues contract by contract by -9.6% in W. Europe, -9.4% in E. Europe and -13.4% in MEA during Q1 2013.

The only server segment seeing growth is x86 (1.8% Y-o-Y). Migrations to lower-cost and more flexible alternatives cause a -54.8% Y-o-Y drop in RISC/Itanium Unix revenues, while Other CPU revenues decline by -9.9% following Q4 2012 growth.  Read more...
