EU and Japan Invest €18m in Faster Internet

The EU joins forces with Japanese authorities to invest €18 million in 6 separate projects researching ways to increase network efficiency-- with one project aiming to build networks reaching speeds of up to 19.7Mbps.

"Our Future Internet should know no barriers, least of all barriers created because we did not prepare for the data revolution,” EC VP Neelie Kross says.

The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Commications (MIC) and National Institute of ICT (NCT) take part, together with the likes of Orange, Telefonica, NEC, Panasonic, NTT, KDDI, ADVA, STMicroelectronics and Intel.

According to the EC the word generates 1.7m bytes of data per minute-- and such data traffic will grow 12-fold by 2018.  Read more...

Cisco Refreshes Enterprise Networking

Cisco updates its enterprise networking with the Catalyst 6800 backbone switching line, a new supervisor engine for the 4500-E access switch, a high-end ISR branch router and extensions on the ASR 1000 edge router.

All the product additions make part of the Cisco Enterprise Networks Architecture as part of Open Network Environment (ONE), the Cisco answer to software-defined networking (SDN). According to Cisco ONE adds software programmability to ASICs, operating systems, networking functions, and services across the data centre, WAN and LAN.

The Catalyst 6800 series is an update of the 10-year old Catalyst 6500 switch series. Built for campus backbone 10/40/100Gbps services, the switches feature network progammability and are supervisor- and line card-compatible with the 6500, meaning the 6500 series is not ready for retirement just yet.  Read more...

AMD Announces Server Roadmap

AMD reveals more details on its non-x86 server chip strategy with a 2013-2014 server roadmap detailing launches following the availability of the "Kyoto" Opteron X-Series small-core server processor.

The first ARM-based server SoC from AMD is "Seattle"-- a 64-bit chip featuring Cortex-A57 architecture. It supports up to 128GB of RAM, integrated 10Gb ethernet and AMD "Freedom Fabric" technology grouping low-power CPU cores into clusters.

The 8- and 16-core SoCs will run at 2GHz and offer 2-4 times the performance of the x86-based low-power Opteron Read more...

Pakedge Intros 8-Port PoE Gigabit Switch

The Pakedge S8Mpd fully managed 8-port switch allows the simultaneous routing of all resolutions of uncompressed video and audio via ethernet and fibre, making it useful as more AV goes IT.

Powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE), it is also ideal for retrofit situations where one cannot connect AC power or only one Cat5e cable is available.

The S8Mpd is VLAN-capable-- it allows integrators to set up segmented virtual LANs, with each device on the network (A/V streaming hardware, VoIP phones, guest networks) prioritised to enable faster, more efficient network operation.
