Huawei Intros Servers at IDF 2014

Huawei launches a range of Intel Xeon-based server products at IDF 2014-- the RH8100 V3 8-socket server, the RH5885H V3 4-socket rack server and the E9000 converged architecture blade server.

The RH8100 V3 runs on a Xeon E7-880 v2 processor, with hardware partitioning technology dividing a single 8-socket server into 2 40socket servers. It promises up to 60 features across reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) and is comparable to mid-range PCs in performance and extensibility.

Meanwhile the RH5885H V3 4-socket rack server provides 53 RAS features together with "world record" integer and floating-point computing performance. As well as the Xeon E7-4800 v2 processor it features up to 16 PCIe slots for customer expansion requirements.

A Team Up in Server Cooling

3M, SGI and Intel reveal a fully functional proof-of-concept supercomputer combining Intel and SGI hardware with "revolutionary" 3M-developed two-phase immersion cooling technology.

The machine consists of an an Intel Xeon E5-2600-powered SGI ICE X supercomputer submerged "Novec Engineered Fluid", a liquid 3M describes as "an efficient dielectric that keeps the hardware cooled with minimum additional energy, maximum performance and better reliability."

According to the 3M the liquid reduces cooling costs by up to 95%, eliminates the equipment air and water cooling require and takes up to 10 times less space than conventional air cooling systems. It also allows the use of generated heat for heating or other processes such as sea water desalination.

TeamWork 601, Digital Collaboration Systems

Extron Electronics announces the immediate availability of TeamWork 601, the company's newest collaboration system.

The TeamWork 601 system supports up to four digital laptops or tablets, and two legacy analog computer-video and audio sources. Analog signals are digitized so that they can be switched to the display, along with native HDMI signals, on a single HDMI cable.

TeamWork 601 works with most flat panel displays, laptops, and tablets. It also works with virtually any new or existing furniture system. Optional mounting hardware facilitates different collaboration table or work surface designs.

Extron TeamWork is a fully customizable collaboration system that is ideal for corporate and education applications. Pre-configured packages, including the TeamWork 601, TeamWork 600, and TeamWork 400 are available for fast implementation with minimal setup. Read more...

A First Glimpse of Reversible USB

Intel provides a first glimpse of the next generation of USB connector at IDF 2014-- USB 3.1 Type-C, a connector similar in size to current micro-USB but actually reversible, Apple Lightning connector-style.

The USB Implementer Forum (USB-IF) first announced initial work on the connector back in December 2013.

As well as being small and reversible, the USB Type-C connector transfers data at 10Gbps and delivers up to 100W of power, from 5V at 2A for handhelds to 20V at 5A for workstations and hubs. It also handles audio/video signals and can be used to daisy-chain monitor, eliminating the need for A/V connectors.
