Cisco Claims

Cisco promises to bring nothing less than a "new internet" with the announcement of Silicon One-- a "first-ever single, unified silicon architecture" found inside the 8000 series, the "most powerful" carrier-class routers from the company.

“Innovation requires focused investment, the right team and a culture that values imagination," the company continues. "We are dedicated to transforming the industry to build a new internet for the 5G era. Our latest solutions in silicon, optics and software represent the continued innovation we're driving that helps our customers stay ahead of the curve and create new, ground-breaking experiences for their customers and end users for decades to come.”

Supermicro: Datacentres Failing to Go Green

According to Supermicro, the majority of datacentre leaders continue to not fully consider green initiatives for the growing buildout of datacentre infrastructure, leading to not only increasing costs but also an impact on the environment.

The finding comes from the 2nd Annual Datacentres and the Environment Report. It involves an industry survey of over 5000 IT professionals based all over the world, and assesses the purchase considerations of datacentre equipment in order to help datacentre leaders better quantify decisions for long-term environmental impact through energy savings and e-waste reductions.

24-Port Unmanaged PoE Switches From Netgear

Netgear announces what it claims are the first high-power unmanaged gigabit ethernet 24-port PoE+ switches on the market with "PoE Power Auto-Balance Allocation," namely the GS324P and the GS324PP switches.

The GS324P is a 24-port unmanaged PoE+ switch able to provide a 190W PoE budget across 16 PoE+ ports. It also includes 8 non-PoE ports. Meanwhile the PS324PP offers a 380W PoE power budget across 24 ports for connection across existing core networks. Both switches promise the best cost/PoE budget ratio, and feature a compact and quiet design allowing for either desktop or rackmount placement.

According to the company, "PoE Power Auto-Balance and Allocation" technology automatically balances the PoE power allocated to each port according to device need, independent of the PoE class detected. The result is optimal power allocation and energy efficiency across PoE ports. The models deliver the power the device needs at the "most granular level," allowing connection of more powered devices vs standard unmanaged PoE switches.

The OTTO Robot-Managed, Liquid-Cooled Datacentre

Datacentre hardware maker TMGcore presents OTTO, a system it describes a "completely automated, self-contained, two-phase liquid immersion-cooled datacentre platform (2PLIC)" promising gains in performance and cuts in both costs and space.

“Datacentre hardware manufacturers today are tasked with building technology capable of handling increasingly vast amounts of data processing while addressing challenges including uptime, environmental impact and operating costs associated with building and operating a large datacentre-- namely space and power constraints,” the company says. “We designed OTTO to address these major issues facing the industry. OTTO provides companies with a solution that is scalable, quick to market, secure and extremely energy efficient while remaining cost effective.”
