NetApp Intros More Flash Storage

NetApp launches the EF540-- the first all-flash storage array designed for performance-driven enterprise-class applications from the company.

It carries up to 19.2TB of storage in a 2U rack-mount space and delivers over 300000 IOPS with sub-millisecond latency. Built on the SANtricity OS, the EF540 is complete with fully redundant components and takes seconds to carry out out backups and disaster recovery.

The EF540 is not the only storage-related announcement from NetApp-- the company also reveals FlashRay, a new purpose-built all-flash storage Read more...

Intel Shrinks Down the SSDs

Intel announces the SSD 525 series-- packing the same performance and low power consumption of a standard 2.5-inch SSD in a package just one-eight the size.

Coming in 30, 60, 90, 12, 180 and 240GB sizes, the drives carry 25nm architecture identical to their bigger SSD brothers. Mini-SATA connectors allow use in the smaller notebook PCIe slots with the full SATA 6GB/s data rate.

Like the larger SSD 520 series, the SSD 525 series offers 50000 IOPS of random read speed and 550MB/s of sequential read, as well as 80000 IOPS random write and 520MB/s Read more...

DNA: The Key for Future Storage

Researchers at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) believes they have the next storage format-- DNA, a material that is both robust and long lasting while being incredibly small.

The EBI claims one can store "at least" 100 million hours of HD video in a cup of DNA.

As an alternative to HDDs and magnetic tape, DNA might be hard to beat. As EBI researcher Nick Goldman puts it, "DNA is a robust way to store information because we can extract it from wooly mammoth bones, which date back tens of thousands of years, and make sense of it. It is also incredibly small, dense and does not need any power for storage.” Read more...

BitMicro Takes On Enterprise Storage

BitMicro reveals the first maxIO SSD products-- enterprise-class PCIe solid state drives powered by the Talino architecture controller, able to deliver up to 400000 random 4KB IOPS per controller.

Using eMLC flash, the initial maxIO product is a full height, half-length PCI solid state accelerator handling up to up to 4.5TB of NAND flash, making it ideal for cloud, big data and streaming applications.

The SSDs carry patented flash management, data recovery technology, full data path protection, advanced security features and BitMicro's PowerGuard power failure technology.

SLC and MLC flash variants should be available in the future, together with maxIO PCIe low profile and maxIO 2.5-inch SAS SSDs.  Read more...
