Seagate Launches 6th Gen 15K HDDs

Seagate announces what it claims is "world's fastest hard drive for mission critical applications"-- the 6th generation Enterprise Performance 15K HDDs, with sustained transfer rates reaching up to 315MB/s.

The 2.5-inch HDDs promise to improve TCO for faster time-to-data for transaction-based applications, with 2ms latency and sustained transfer rate (outer to inner) of 315 to 215MB/s. The interface fo choice is the 12GB/s SAS, while MTBF clocks at 2 million hours and a 256MB multisegmented DRAM cache is included.

Further features include TurboBoost technology (with 16GB NAND buffer) for optimum response times and Advanced Write Caching (8MB NVRAM cache) for mission-critical storage workload efficiency. Average operating power consumption varies according to model, but stands at around 4.7-5.8W.

Dell EMC Isilon Goes All-Flash

Dell EMC announces an all-flash version of the Isilin scale-out NAS platform at Dell EMC World 2016-- the predictably named Isilon All-Flash, designed to handle massive amounts of unstructured data.

According to the company Isilon All-Flash combines the performance of flash technology with the scalability, multi-protocol access and security of the Isilon OneFS OS. It features a dense blade-node architecture consisting of 4 Isilon nodes within a singe 4U chassis, with capacity options ranging from 92 to 924TB per chassis.

Several Isilon All-Flash configurations are available, and customers can combine units into a single cluster to provide up to 92.4PB of capacity and over 1.5TB/s of aggregate performance. The system is ideal for a wide variety applications and unstructured workloads, including 4K data streaming, genomic sequencing, electronic design automation, and near real-time big data analytics.

Drobo Storage Gets USB-C

Drobo announces a first storage array equipped with a USB-C port-- the Drobo 5C, a 5-bay self-managing storage solution offering all the features of the original Drobo hardware.

Built on BeyondRAID technology, the Drobo 5C handles a variety of different size HDDs and brand, eliminating the limitations of traditional RAID systems. Drives are easily swappable, with no need for file shuffling or configuration, and installation requires no carriers or screws. A "traffic light interface" promises initial setup takes less than 10 minutes.

Meanwhile the USB-C interface is compatible with both USB 3.0 and 2.0, and offers average performance of 250MB/sec.

Dell EMC Presents ScaleIO Ready Node

The newly merged Dell EMC presents a first product-- the ScaleIO Ready Node, essentially 13th generation PowerEdge x86-based servers optimised to run ScaleIO software-defined block storage software.

According to the company the ScaleIO Ready node enables customers to quickly deploy a server storage-area network fitting within existing legacy infrastructure. As a fully supported DSD solution it features workload-optimised PowerEdge rack servers, enhanced caching software and operating system flexibility through compatibility with Linux, Windows, Unix and OpenStack.

The system is also hypervisor-agnostic, as it supports VMware vSphere, Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V, Linux and OpenStack deployments. Customers can also select different deployment models (storage-only and hyper-converged) and configurations, including all-HDD, all-flash and hybrid.

Netgear Updates Rack-Mount Storage

Netgear presents a refresh of the ReadyNAS network-attached storage (NAS) lineup at IFA 2016 with 3 rack-mount systems, the ReadyNAS 3312, ReadyNAS 4312S and ReadyNAS 4312X.

The 3 models are 2U rack-mount network storage systems with 12-bay capacity for up to 120TB and 600TB of total storage in expansion mode. The ReadyNAS 4312S amd 4312X feature 5th generation Intel Xeon Enterprise Server processors and dual 10-gigabit ethernet ports for what Netgear describes as a data storage package able to keep up with the growth in production and consumption of data while providing consistent performance.

The ReadyNAS 4312S and 4312X are scalable through best-in-class processing and memory expansion for scaling VMs, backups and file servers. They integrate into any system via 10Gb copper or fibre network respectively, and interoperate with 10Gb switching solutions. Customers can also connect the systems to dedicated SFP+ or 10GBASE-T switches, and the 4312X offers backwards compatibility with 1GbE switching.
