London Tube Getting Free Olympic Wifi

E-mail Print PDF

Londoners using the underground subway system might be dreading the July and August 2012 Olympics, what with striking drivers and tourists hordes... but at least they'll get free wifi for the duration of the athletic season.

Tube trainVirgin Media will provide the system, covering around 80 stations. Wifi however will not reach deeper parts of the Underground system (such as trains and platforms), and the service will be shut down to non-Virgin customers once the concluding Olympic act, the Paralympic Games, are over.

The company also promises it will extend the service to "up to" 120 Tube stations by end 2012.

The Tube will not be the only part of London enjoying free wifi-- Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea boroughs will also have gratis wireless internet, courtesy of O2.

Here's an interesting fact-- the London Underground is not really "underground." Or at least, not completely. Nearly 55% of tracks are actually above the ground, as only the central London tracks are (mostly, anyway) beneath surface!
