Violin Launches All-Silicon Storage

E-mail Print PDF

Violin launches its first all-silicon storage system-- the Violin 6000 Series flash memory arrays.

Describing it as a "Rack in a Box," the company says the 600 series has an 80% reduction in costs per IOPS and a 15:1 reduction in hardware physical consolidation from a disk array vendor.

Violin 6000 SeriesEverything comes in twos inside the 6000 series-- dual controllers, power supplies, gateway ports, even extra Violin virtual memory modules (VIMMs) providing self-healing and memory aggregation.

Violin vRAID technology provides protection, striping data across multiple VIMMs and reducing latency with non-blocking erases, while everything on the 6000 series is hot swappable.

The series supports eight 4-8Gbps fibre channel connections or eight 10Gbps iSCSI connections, with vShare software managing all protocols.

Two versions are available-- the 6616 (using SLC technology, supports 16TBs per array and delivers 1M RAIDed IOPS) and the 6232 (using MLC, suports 32TBs per array and delivers 500000 RAIDed IOPS).

Violin also upgrades its 3000 series-- the 3200 series now carries MLC technology to increase storage to 20TB per 3U shelf.
