Desktop Virtualisation is Priority

E-mail Print PDF

The desktop virtualisation market is approaching tipping point according to an industry survey commissioned by Dimension Data, where over 50% of 546 global survey participants say desktop virtualisation is either a "critical" or "major initiative" over the next 12-18 months.

Virtualisation42% of participants say investment (or implementation) of virtual desktops is high priority, while 12% says it is a "critical priority".

The survey also predicts virtual deployment levels will grow from 27% to 46% of enterprises over the next 2 years.

Enterprise appears to be prioritising desktop virtualisation over the Windows 7 refresh, with only 13% of survey respondents completing their enterprise Windows 7 roll-out.

However Dimension Data says desktop virtualisation is not a "silver bullet" solving their desktop challenges-- one "must first understand their business drivers, workforce demands, and the state of their application ecosystems before defining their next-generation desktop roadmap."

Not to mention desktop virtualisation still requires "significant investment" in network infrastructure, servers, storage upgrades and licensing fees before truly becoming cost effective-- and truly meeting business and end user requirements.
