Vivek Kundra Points at the Cloud

E-mail Print PDF

Former US government CIO Vivek Kundra says the global economy is "wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary information technology"-- and the cloud is an opportunity to cut such costs while increasing productivity.

Cloud computingWriting on the New York Times, Kundra accuses the "IT cartel" of powerful private contractors for worsening the situation by encouraging "reliance on inefficient software and hardware that is expensive to acquire and to maintain."

Until leaving the Obama administration this summer, Kundra planned a "Cloud First" strategy, advocating cloud service adoptation by government agencies.

Now he urges the world's nations to discuss the creation of a global Cloud First policy forcing nations to work together on the global flow (and restriction) of cloud data between nations at the January World Economic Forum.

Kundra concludes there are opportunities in the shape of "substantial savings and 21st-century jobs" within the cloud-- while those preserving the non-cloud status quo "will be punished."
