As 5G starts to hit the mainstream Intel partners with MediaTek in the development, certification and support of PC modem solutions able to handle this next generation of wireless connectivity.

Intel 5G modemThe partnership has MediaTek develop and produce a 5G modem based on an Intel solution specification. In addition, Intel will also provide optimisation and validation across the platform, and lend system integration and co-engineering support to further enable OEM partners.

“5G is poised to unleash a new level of computing and connectivity that will transform the way we interact with the world," Chipzilla says. "This partnership with MediaTek brings together industry leaders with deep engineering, system integration and connectivity expertise to deliver 5G experiences on the next generation of the world’s best PCs.”

MediaTek already has experience working on 5G, having recently developed the Dimensity 1000 5G SoC for mobile devices. A 7nm processor featuring x4 big Arm Cortex A77 cores, x4 LITTLE Arm cortex A55 cores and an Arm Mali-G77 GPU, the Dimensity 1000 is aimed at flagship smartphones, and as such also includes a 5G NR (sub 6GHz) modem capable of transfers reaching up to 4.7Gbps.

Intel says the first PC products carrying the 5G modem will hit the market come early 2021. Dell and HP should be among the first OEMs shipping laptops enabled with the Intel-Mediatek solution.
