European Research Networks Boosting Speeds

E-mail Print PDF

The European National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and DANTE are preparing to deploy 100 Gbps connections across their networks-- thus upgrading the GÉANT network's 40 Gbps backbone.

geantThe organisations require the boost in speeds to enable further collaboration in research covering areas including climate change, energy, food security, medicin and genetics, as well as allowing for new digitisation projects.

The GÉANT network should see 100 Gbps upgrades on its key routes in 2012, through collaboration with DANTE and NREN partners across Europe.

The German (DFN), French (RENATER), British (JANET), Dutch (SURFnet) and Nordic (NORDUnet) networks are also going through 100 Gbps trials and implementations. For example, a DFN 100 Gbps test lasting 18 hours saw the transmission of 735TB worth of data, while RENATER handles transmissions between CERN and IN2P3 in Lyon.
