Qualcomm uses MWC 2019 to announce the Snapdragon 8cx platform-- the chip designed by the company to power the "always on, always connected" laptops of the near future-- will feature 5G connectivity.

Qualcomm LenovoAnnounced back in December 2018, the now imaginatively titled Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute Platform promises to do nothing less than "lead the PC ecosystem into the 5G era." To do so the chip integrates the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, and will allow enterprises to build private 5G small-cell networks providing a more secure and high-performance data link for next generation connected applications.

As for PC makers taking advantage of the technology, Qualcomm already has one name-- Lenovo, who says it will "be the first" to have a Snapdragon-enabled 5G PC on the market come early 2020.

“The way people connect, work and play is evolving, and with the advent of 5G, connectivity will be even more important in driving the next wave of smart, personalized computing experiences,” Lenovo says. “This new generation of smart PCs that will offer artificial intelligence, high performance, long battery life and always-on connectivity has the promise of enabling better, faster and more seamless experiences for consumers, small businesses and large enterprises.”

The Snapdragon 8cx platform promises performance comparable to a 15W machine from a fanless 7W TDP design allowing for full-day battery life. It also supports both 2nd gen USB 3.0 and 3rd gen PCIe, dual 4K HDR displays and hifi audio through built-in Aqstic audio and aptX Hd codecs, as well as Quick Charge 4+ technology.
