Amazon Offers AWS Backup

Amazon Web Services (AWS) launches a fully-managed backup service for both AWS services and on-premises-- the simply named Backup, a means for easier protection of storage volumes, databases and file systems.

AWS BackupAWS Backup allows customers to set backup policies for services such as Amazon EBS volumes, RDS databases, DynamoDB tables, EFS file systems and AWS Storage Gateway volumes, with support for more services coming in the future. Integration with AWS Storage Gateway allows the backup of on-premises data on the Amazon cloud.

A single console provides a centralised backup management across AWS, with a few clicks allowing the creation of policies defining the frequency and duration of backups. Customers can then assign the policies to AWS resources, and Backup automatically handles the rest by scheduling backup actions for the assigned resources, orchestrating across AWS services and managing the retention period.

“As the cloud has become the default choice for customers of all sizes, it has attracted two distinct types of builders. Some are tinkerers who want to tweak and fine tune the full range of AWS services into a desired architecture, and other builders are drawn to the same breadth and depth of functionality in AWS, but are willing to trade some of the service granularity to start at a higher abstraction layer, so they can build even faster,”   Amazon says. “We designed AWS Backup for this second type of builder who has told us that they want one place to go for backups versus having to do it across multiple, individual services."

The AWS Backup service is available now.
