Mirantis Takes on the Edge

E-mail Print PDF

Mirantis is the next company to offer an edge computing solution with Mirantis Cloud Platform Edge (MCP Edge)-- a system based on the open source Kubernetes container orchestration software.

MCP EdgeFor the unfamiliar, edge infrastructure consits of many geographically distributed points of presence (POPs) with heterogeneous architecture, demanding a different approach to deployment and management. Aimed at telcos wanting to rollout 5G services at the network edge, MCP Edge promises low footprint, low latency and high throughput edge infrastructure based on open standards. It offers centralised management, and integrates Kubernetes 1.1, OpenStack and DriveTrain, the Mirantis infrastructure manager, for a combination of container, VM and bare metal POPs connected by a unified management plane.

“Edge footprints need to support a wide diversity of application use cases. Service providers are still in learning mode-- gearing up for edge computing with the advent of new technologies like 5G, IOT and autonomous driving,” the company says. “Infrastructure agility at the edge will enable businesses to adapt and roll out new use cases quickly, with minimal cost.”

A demo version of MCP Edge allows users to deploy a Kubernetes-based 6-node edge POP capable of running containers and VMs. It can be deployed on a single server or public cloud instance, and allows the running of mixed workloads through Virtlet, the open source container runtime interface pioneered by Mirantis and developed by the Kubernetes community.
