Red Hat announces OpenShift Container Platform 3.11-- now with multiple components integrated from the CoreOS Tectonic Kuberentes distributions, including a cluster administrator console and the CoreOS Operator concept.

OpenShift updateA January 2018 Red Hat acquisition, CoreOS has an own Kuberenetes orchestration platform-slash-OpenShift rival called Tectonic. As one might expect, the acquisition involved the integration of the best CoreOS features into OpenShift, such as a cluster administration console providing means to manage nodes, roles-based access controls and other underlying cloud infrastructure objects.

Other features include an implementation of Prometheus monitoring and eventing technology and the integration of Operator SDK, a tool able to understand the Kubernetes API and create, configure and manage Kubernetes instances.

OpenShift also logging and monitoring features through the addition of a pair of open-source tools, Prometheus and Grafana. Prometheus comes from Kubernetes developer Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), while Grafana is a data visualisation and monitoring project. The tools work together within OpenShift 3.11, with Prometheus allowing admins to run own monitoring services for applications and Grafana providing detailed metrics data without complex query language.

The update also brings the announcement of OpenShift Container Engine-- a stripped down OpenShift Container Platform configuration allowing customers to bring existing networking, management and DevOps services to OpenShift. It is built on the same enterprise Kubernetes core platform, and in case customers need a more extended feature set they can simply upgrade to OpenShift Container Platform.
