Yubico Adds FIDO2 Support to Security Keys

E-mail Print PDF

Security key specialist Yubico announces the YubiKey 5 series-- a set of 4 multi-protocol security keys with features including support for the FIDO2 standard and NFC capability.

Yubico 5Yubico is actually one of the companies behind the FIDO2 specification (and the W3C-developed WebAuthn component). All platforms and browsers either support or are engaged in the standards work, allowing for authentication through devices such as the YubiKey, with or without a username and password.

YubiKey 5 devices support FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, PIV (smart card), OpenPGP, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP, OATH-HOTP and challenge-response, making a future-proof security solution. The addition of FIDO2 allows for passwordless logins, with either single-factor or 2nd factor authentication through combination with the regular username and password. Customers can even use YubiKey 5 as part of a multi-factor authentication setup with a PIN and touch.

Another YubiKey 5 feature is NFC-- a means for seamless and secure tap-and-go experience with mobile devices or external NFC readers. Such capability make the solution ideal for fast-paced environments, including financial services, healthcare and retail POS.

YubiKey 5 models include the YubiKey 5 NFC, YubiKey 5 Nano, YubiKey 5C, and YubiKey 5C Nano.
