Toshiba Combines Windows 10 Mini-PC With Glasses

E-mail Print PDF

Toshiba presents a wearable computing solution-- the dynaEdge AR Smart Glasses, a combination of the dynaEdge Mini PC with an AR100 Head Mounted Display, making a Windows 10 machine with a headset display.

Toshiba glassesAimed mainly at enterprise customers, the dynaEdge AR Smart Glasses looks cumbersome compared to the likes of Google Glass. The AR100 is not technically a headset, since it actually is a single arm customers can attach to glasses, safety googles or a hard hat. It features an integrated 640 x 360 quarter-inch display, GPS, head-tracking accelerometer, 5MP camera, touchpad, dual noise-cancelling microphones and an ear speakers, and provides a custom control interface for Windows 10.

The AR100 is tethered to the dynaEdge Mini PC via USB-C cable. The Mini PC weighs just 0.3kg and carries a 6th generation Intel Core M processor, 6GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage and connectivity via wifi and Bluetooth. It also includes 5 hardware buttons as an alternative to control from the headset.

The system does not overlay augment reality imagery over the real world like the Microsoft HoloLens-- instead it "assists" reality with tiny display (the equivalent of looking at a 5-inch mobile display from 43cm distance, Toshiba says) allowing users to check documents, record and send photos or even launch video chats without need to use their hands.

The Toshiba dynaEdge AR Smart Glasses are available now.
