Cisco Buys Conversational AI With MindMeld

E-mail Print PDF

Cisco pays $125 million for MindMeld, a startup with a "unique AI platform that enables customers to build intelligent and human-like conversational interfaces for any application or device."

Cisco mindmeldLaunched in 2012 as Expect Labs, MindMeld initially worked on an API allowing developers to add a voice interface to apps using a few lines of code. Following that MindMeld expanded its product offering to a suite of APIs for parsing, reasoning and generating language, making it relevant to Cisco's interests.

As Cisco puts it, AI and machine learning will allow customers to self-manage networks and datacentres, stay ahead of security attacks, embed intelligence at the edge, deliver predictive analytics and, ultimately, "revolutionise the workplace." That, or simply interact with software such as Spark using natural language commands.

Post-acquisition MindMeld technology will be integrated into the Spark platform in order to "transform how users interact in Cisco Spark Spaces, Cisco Spark Meetings, and Cisco Spark Care." The team joins the Cisco Collaboration group as the Cognitive Collaboration team, under the leadership of SVP Jens Meggers.
