E-mail Print PDF

Cisco gets more SD-WAN capability as it buys cloud-based SD-WAN player Viptela for $610 million-- a purchase described as a bargain, since the startup was valued at $900m just a year ago.

Cisco ViptelaFounded in 2012 by ex-Cisco execs and engineers, Viptela sells an SD-WAN solution allowing enterprises to easily manage connections with branch offices and WAN deployments. As Cisco puts it, “Viptela’s technology is cloud-first, with a focus on simplicity and ease of deployment while simultaneously providing a rich set of capabilities and scale. These principles are what today’s customers demand."

Cisco plans to combine Viptela cloud-first management, orchestration and overlay technology with its routing platforms, services and SD-WAN capabilities. It will also continue supporting the Viptela product offering and architecture, as well as existing Cisco IWAN and Meraki SD-WAN solutions.

Post-acquisition the Viptela team will join the Cisco Enterprise Routing team within the Networking and Security business led by SVP David Goeckeler.
