Star Achitect to Open ISE 2017: Ole Scheeren

E-mail Print PDF

Ole Scheeren

“Ole Scheeren is the man who makes the impossible possible in architecture. He is a man who turns structural calculations into magic, who can seemingly make skyscrapers disappear into thin air and who created a movie theater that floats in the Indian Ocean. His wave of success has already carried him far. And when he has his way, this will only be the beginning.” Der Spiegel

One of the world’s pop stars of architecture, Ole Scheeren is a German architect and principal of Buro Ole Scheeren with offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Berlin, and Bangkok. He is chief designer and leading the company’s creative vision and strategic development.

And what a creative vision that is… for example, one project, MahaNakhon, is-- at 314 meters-- Bangkok’s tallest tower. Housing the Ritz-Carlton Residences, the building features a pixelated ribbon that swirls around the exterior, peeling back its surface layer to expose an inner layer (also creating balconies with sweeping views of the city).

Another project underway, Angkasa Raya, is a landmark building in the center of Kuala Lumpur, rising 268 meters tall altering the perception of what a skyscraper can be and how it connects to the city.

Ole Scheeren has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Urban Habitat Award and the World Building of the Year for The Interlace (the world's most amazing group of high-rise apartment buildings with more than 1000 apartments), and the Best Tall Building award for CCTV Tower in Beijing (the world's largest media building with more expensive technology than any other structure.) The German architect co-designed the buildings (as partner-in-charge) with Rotterdam-based star architect Rem Koolhaas’s firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).

Through Studio Ole Scheeren, he is exploring his more personal interest in non-architectural projects and interventions, such as Archipelago Cinema, a floating auditorium in the Andaman Sea for the “Film on the Rocks” Festival in Yao Noi, Thailand, and subsequently installed at the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice. He also developed Mirage City Cinema, a cinema-architecture space commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation as part of the Sharjah Biennial 11 Film Programme.

Ole Scheeren’s current work also includes the Guardian Art Center (a new exhibition space and headquarters for China’s oldest art auction house currently under construction near the Forbidden City in Beijing), 1500 West Georgia (a residential high-rise in downtown Vancouver), DUO (a large-scale mixed-use urban development under construction in Singapore), and a large-scale mixed-use urban development in Shenzhen, China.

Der Spiegel calls Ole Scheeren “a visionary and a master of sensational details.”  And this “starchitect” will be on stage in our RAI Forum, sharing with us his thoughts about the role of architects in smart buildings and more…
