Google, Intel Team Up in Cloud, IoT

E-mail Print PDF

Google announces a "strategic alliance" with Intel-- one based around optimising Google services, such as cluster management and machine learning, via Intel hardware, as well as technology integrations and joint marketing efforts.

Cloud collaborationThe two companies have a history in collaboration, since Google has been developing datacentre processors with Intel. As such, the newly announced partnership will take the relationship further, combining Google Cloud software with Intel hardware in areas including cloud cluster management, machine learning, security and the Internet of Things.

One core focus is containers, specifically Google's Kubernetes-- engineers from the two companies are working on code optimisations to boost Kubernetes workloads running on Intel hardware. The two companies will also tweak TensorFlow to leverage Intel CPU cores more efficiently and take better advantage of the memory allocation capabilities of the hardware, and plan to create a secure platform for the connection of Intel IoT devices to the Google Cloud Platform.

On the security front, Google and Intel plan on "enhancing security integrations between Intel hardware and [Google Cloud Platform] infrastructure that will further improve security for enterprise customers."

Interestingly, earlier this week Google announced a similar partnership with AMD-- 2017 will see Google use Radeon-based AMD GPUs to accelerate Google Compute Engine and Google Cloud Machine Learning services. The search giant will also make AMD CPU resources available to customers wanting to run tasks such as medical and financial simulations on the cloud.
