ePaper Makes Colour Breakthrough

E-mail Print PDF

E Ink, the company behind the ePaper display inside the Amazon Kindle, makes a colourful breakthrough-- Advanced Colour ePaper (ACeP), an ePaper display able to display up to 32000 colours.

E Ink Colour DisplayDescribed as a first in electrophoretic displays (EPD) ACeP achieves full colour gamut, including all 8 primary colours, without need for a colour filter array (CFA). The colour display uses a single layer of electrophoretic fluid controlled via voltages compatible with TFT backplanes. Such a solution is described as more commercially viable than alternative solutions involving complex stacked backplane structures.

The company adds ACeP technology retains the ultra-low-power and paper-like readability of regular monochrome ePaper displays.

“At its heart, E Ink is a materials and technology company,” E Ink says. “It’s this core that provides the energy and the foundation for the stream of products being developed at E Ink. We expect ACeP to become the basis upon which another generation of EPD display products can be developed.”

The current incarnation of ACeP comes with a catch, though-- it is currently only available in 20-inch sizes offering 1600x2500 resolution at 150ppi. Thus it less than ideal for eReaders, but can find in-store digital signage applications.
