Seagate Presents Enterprise, SMB HDDs

E-mail Print PDF

Seagate announces a pair of HDDs, one aimed at enterprise customers and the other for SMBs-- a first 10TB 3.5-inch HDD featuring Helium technology and the NAS HDD 8TB, the largest NAS drive from the company.

Seagate HDDsThe 10TB Enterprise Capacity 3.5 promises "the industry's lowest power and weight available in a 10TB drive." Designed for use in cloud datacentres, the HDD features 7 platters and 14 heads, and is sealed in helium to reduce friction and resistance on the platters. The result, the company claims, is 25% more density to "dramatically" increase petabytes per rack.

The drive also includes Seagate technology such as PowerChoice (manages ongoing power and cooling costs during idle tem) and PowerBalance (optimises IOPS/Watt).

Meanwhile the NAS HDD 8TB is ideal for SMBs making use of NAS storage, and is optimised for use cases such as backup and disaster recovery, print and file servers, multimedia storage, archiving, file sharing and virtualisation. It is designed for tower enclosures with 1-8 bays, delivering up to 64TB in a single 8-bay desktop form factor NAS.

In addition Seagate promises a 180TB/year workload rate limit (WRL), 1M hour MTBF and a "one-of-kind" optional 3-year rescue data recovery service protecting against potential data loss.

The 10TB Enterprise Capacity 3.5 and NAS HDD 8TB are shipping now to select customers before general availability at end Q1 2015.
