In addition the public cloud supports "huge revenue streams" from numerous internet services, such as search, social networking, email and e-commerce platforms.

According to the analyst public cloud hardware and software account for 24% of overall datacentre infrastructure spending, while public cloud operators and associated digital content companies account for 47% of the datacentre colocation market. The cloud is also the industry segment showing the most growth-- while the total IT market grows at least than 5% Y-o-Y, IaaS/PaaS revenues are up by 49% Y-o-Y and SaaS shows 29% Y-o-Y growth.

When it comes to vendor rankings, the supply side sees Cisco, HP, Dell, BIM and Equinix as having the biggest revenue share. On the cloud services side AWS, Microsoft, Salesforce, Google and IBM are market leaders.

"Public cloud is now a market that is characterized by big numbers, high growth rates and a relatively small number of global IT players," the analyst concludes. "While there is still a place for small-medium sized public cloud players, especially on the service side within a specific region, the public cloud really is dominated by hyperscale cloud operators that can afford to build huge data center footprints that span multiple continents."
