An Initiative in SSD Data Recovery

E-mail Print PDF

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and the Solid State Storage Initative (SSSI) form the Data Recovery/Erase Special Interest Group (DR/E SIG)-- an industry initiative in the recovery of data from faulty or damaged solid state storage.

SSD SNIA“SSDs present particular challenges when trying to erase all data or attempting to recover data from a nonoperational drive,” the group says.  “The DR/E SIG provides a forum in which solution providers and solid state storage manufacturers can collaborate to enable data recovery and erase capabilities in solid state storage in such a way as to ensure that customer demands for these services can be met in a cost-effective and timely manner with a high likelihood of success.”

The DR/E SIG plans to join major solid state storage players, including vendors, data recovery providers, standards bodies and businesses making using solid state storage. Its aim is to create better recovery/erase techniques for both current and future revisions of SSDs and NVSIMMs, as well as getting SSD makers to coordinate with recovery professionals in the development of standard recovery tools.

Currently SSDs represent a data recovery challenge, since device life and endurance extending techniques (namely wear-levelling, bad block management, garbage collection and Trim command) constantly shuffle data around, making for far less linear storage than HDDs. Self-encrypting drives (SEDs) are even more demanding, since no recovery is possible without vendor assistance.
