IDC: Attacks Drive Q1 Appliance Market

According to IDC global security appliance revenues and shipments are on the up in Q1 2015, as revenues reach $2.3 billion with 7.5% Y-o-Y growth and shipments grow by 9.4% Y-o-Y to 526767 units.

However IDC points out sequential declines-- Q1 2015 revenues and shipments drop by -12.8% and -12.6% Q-o-Q respectively.

"Today's threat environment is extremely dynamic and continues to change exponentially," the analyst says. "The growing volume and sophistication of cyber attacks has created an environment where integrating disparate security solutions is required to protect sensitive business and personal information, as well as to safeguard national security."

W. Europe sees positive results, with revenues growing by 9.8% Y-o-Y thanks to strong results in the UK (owns 24% of regional Q1 2015 market share) and Germany (21.4%). On the other hand CEMA revenues see steep declines of -11% Y-o-Y (or -26.2% Q-o-Q).

IDC says CEMA also sees declines in global shipment share reaching 7.2%, a -1.2 point drop from Q1 2014.

When it comes to vendors Cisco continues to lead the global rankings with 17.6% Q1 2015 revenue share and growth reaching 8.8% Y-o-Y. Check Point follows through revenues growing by 12.2% Y-o-Y, while Palo Alto Networks makes it to 3rd place with 9.5% market share and 54.3% Y-o-Y growth.

Rounding up the top 5 are Fortinet (8.3% market share) and Blue Coat (4.7% share).
