Who Are the Best (and Worst) Software Vendors?

E-mail Print PDF

Flexera Software and IDC collate the opinions of 147 enterprises on the state of their commercial software vendor of choice-- opinions resellers and vendors should do well to take note of.

PrizesThe survey covers some of the largest industry players around, namely Adobe, CA, Citrix, EMC, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Salesforce.com, Symantec and VMWare, who together represent 50% of the enterprise software market and over $200 billion in software spending. It consists of ratings across 8 categories, such as ease of product use, whether the vendor is easy to work with and the friendliness (or lack thereof) of the vendor's licensing regime.

As such, Citrix emerges as a winner in 3 categories-- licensing rules allowing for easy migration between cloud, mobile and virtualisation, rarity of license compliance audits and good ROI. HP wins in 2 categories (easy to understand licensing rules and rare forcing of license compliance true-up fee payments), as does VMware (easy to manage applications and easily understandable usage and spend).

EMC wins the easy to work with category.

The worst rated vendor? Oracle, who earns the lowest scores in not 1, not 2 but in all 8 categories. Impressive, sort of.

"Building great products that deliver ROI is and should be the primary driver for every software vendor. However this report suggests that software companies must also look downstream and optimise the customer experience across a wide range of value criteria," Flexera says. "Ease of management, remaining in license compliance, upgrading and migrations-- are just a few of the factors that have very real impact on organizations' ability to support their applications, and therefore on their overall opinion of their software vendors.
