Accelerate Enterprise Applications with Violin

E-mail Print PDF

Violin accelerates demanding enterprise applications with vCache, its first multi-terabyte capacity NFS cache.

ViolinVCache uses Gear6's NFS caching software with Violin's scalable flash memory array technology. Violin says it centralises massive massive memory pools from existing NAS, serving data 10-50x faster than mechanical disks.

The vCache combines DRAM and flash memory to boost throughput up to 5GB/sec (30000 I/Os per second on file systems).

The device sits in front of any NFS origin server.

Violin claims its system caches an entire active database thus increases NFS operations and bandwith 5x and reduces latency by 80%.

A Violin 3200 memory array contains 10000 single-level cell NAND flash chips on cards (modules) in a massively parallel configuration. A wear-leveling algorithm controls data distribution and ensures one module doesn't wear out before another.

Thanks to RAID configuration, when a module wears out it can be replaced without disrupting operations.

Gear6 also provides a GUI-based web interface to monitor multiple vCache modules and check on memory board health.
