HP has a busy week at the Discover 2013 enterprise conference, Las Vegas-- it reveals a revamped Converged Cloud, the HAVEn big data platform, servers aimed at the SMB segment and additions to the Converged Storage product fmily.

HP Discover 2013The HP Converged Cloud now features common OpenStack-based architecture in both private (CloudSystem) and public (Cloud OS) cloud flavours, as well as enterprise-level security and feature additions.

The latest MoonShot servers are also OpenStack-powered, while HP cloud services gain a number of enhancements such as wider data access, virtual private cloud network functionality (via SDN), custom image uploading and a bulk import service.

“Only HP has the portfolio and expertise that combines the innovative power of open systems with enterprise-grade manageability and security," the company claims.

The company then takes on big data with the HAVEn open business analytics platform. A combination of HP (Autonomy, Vertica, ArcSight and Operations Management) and Hadoop technologies, HAVEn offers an open architecture supporting a variety of analytics tools, meaning customers avoid vendor lock-in and compatibility issues.

For the curious the "HAVEn" name stands for Hadoop, Autonomy, Vertica, Enterprise security, with the final "n" denoting the large number of hardware/software offerings (around 700 at moment, HP claims) one can connect to the platform.

HP MoonshotAt the conference HP expands its server line for SMB customers with the ProLiant MicroServer Generation 8 (Gen 8) platform-- a "first server" of sorts complete with compute, storage and networking capabilities.

It carries a dual-core Celeron processor, 2MB cache and 2-16GB of memory inside a form factor 50% the size of similar entry-level servers.

"Think of it as "baby's first data center,"" HP Executive VP David Donatelli says. "So for the parents out there, they can buy baby's first data center and hope [their kids] go out and become an entrepreneur, make a billion dollars, and pay you back for all that college education money you just spent."

Further SMB-aimed server solutions launched at Discover 2013 include the ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2 single-processor power server and the ProLiant DL320e Gen8 v2 single-processor rack-optimised servers.

And finally the HP expands its Converged Storage portfolio with an all-flash product-- the 3PAR StoreServ 7450 system. It promises performance of up to 500000 IOPS with less than 0.7ms response time, flash-specific caching algorithms adjusting read/write granularity and 3PAR Priority Optimisation software.
