Cisco Buys into Energy management

E-mail Print PDF

Cisco coughs up $107 million to spice up its business with JouleX, a developer of energy management technologies for networked-attached and data centre assets.

CiscoJouleX sells the JouleX Energy Manager (JEM)-- software providing customers with an energy consumption overview for a full range client devices and data centre systems, from PCs and thin clients to physical and virtual servers, switches, routers, storage systems, VoIP phones, printers and mobile devices.

Cisco is already familiar with JouleX, since Catalyst 3K and 4K switches already ship with the JouleX for EnergyWise a free option.

“[Cisco] want to lessen their reliance on things that they can sell just one time, like hardware, and things where margins are going down, like hardware,” MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese tells Bloomberg. “They want to increase their reliance on things that they can charge customers on a recurring basis for, and this is right in line with that.”

Following acquisition JouleX employees will be integrated into the Connected Energy Solutions team within the Cisco Industry Solutions Group.
