HP fires a long shot at a server turnaround  and launches the first commercially available "Project Moonshot" products-- the Moonshot 1500 enclosure and the ProLiant Moonshot servers.

MoonshotFirst revealed 18 months ago, Project Moonshot is the HP take on low-power mobile processor-based servers, promising savings of up to -89% in power, -80% in space and -77% in costs, compared to traditional servers.

“With nearly 10 billion devices connected to the internet and predictions for exponential growth, we’ve reached a point where the space, power and cost demands of traditional technology are no longer sustainable,” CEO Meg Whitman says. “Moonshot marks the beginning of a new style of IT that will change the infrastructure economics and lay the foundation for the next 20 billion devices.”

Here are details of the actual product offering-- the ProLiant Moonshot server is a small, ultra-low power server. It carries a 2.0 GHz Intel Atom S1260 processor, up to 1TB storage and supports web hosting workloads.

Meanwhile the Moonshot 1500 is a 4.3U server chassis complete with 45 ProLiant Moonshot servers, integrated switch and supporting components.

The launch event also introduces a new HP partner programs-- the Pathfinder Innovation Ecosystem (25 silicon vendors, OS developers and ISVs dedicated to new server development) and Concierge Services (allows customers and ISVs to remotely access and test out Moonshot technology at HP labs).

Moonshot products should be available in Europe from May 2013, and variants using ARM, Texas Instruments and Applied Micro processors will be introduced further in the future.
