iSuppli: 2013 Microserver Demand to Boom

E-mail Print PDF

IHS iSuppli reports global 2013 microserver shipments will grow by 230% in comparison to 2012 thanks to booming demand from mobile and cloud computing services.

The microserver segment covers general-purpose machines housing single or multiple low-power microprocessors usually consuming less than 45W per motherboard.

According to the analyst microserver shipments will reach 291000 units this year, up from 88000 units in 2012 and just 19000 in 2011, before growing to around 12 million by end 2016 with a CAGR of 130%, the fastest server growth rate for the period.

Penetration within the total server market will also leap-- from 0.2% in 2011 to over 10% by 2016.

“Micro servers provide a solution to the challenge of increasing data-center usage driven by mobile platforms,” iSuppli says. “With cloud computing and data centers in high demand in order to serve more smartphones, tablets and mobile PCs online, specific aspects of server design are becoming increasingly important, including maintenance, expandability, energy efficiency and low cost."

A number of hardware makers will reap microserver benefits-- microprocessor vendors Intel, ARM and AMD, server OEMs Dell and HP, and server ODMs Quanta and Wistron. The likes of Microsoft, Red Hat, Citrix and Oracle are also set to profit, as will public cloud providers Amazon, eBay, Google and Yahoo.
