Oracle to Support Itanium After All

E-mail Print PDF

Oracle admits defeat in the bitter legal fight against HP-- following the decision of the California Superior Court, Itanium-based servers will soon get a version of Oracle database 12c.

Support“Oracle will continue building the latest versions of its database and other software covered by the judge’s ruling to HP Itanium computers,” the company says. “Oracle software on HP’s Itanium computers will be released on approximately the same schedule as Oracle software on IBM’s Power systems.”

Back on August 2012 the California court decided Oracle has to support Itanium chips, ruling breach of contract when Oracle decided to stop porting database software for the HP servers. Oracle first develops software on Linux for x86 processors, before porting to other systems.

Oracle dropped Itanium support back in 2010, following the Oracle purchase of Sun Microsystems and HP kicking then CEO Mark Hurd. Tensions between the two companies flared further when HP hired ex-SAP chief Léo Apotheker as CEO and Hurd got a job at Oracle as president.

What happens now? Oracle plans to appeal the court decision... but first it has to develop an Itanium database software update.
