At the 2014 Code Conference Microsoft shows off Skype Translator, an app capable of translating voice conversations in "near real-time"-- effectively turning the service into something akin to a real-life Babel Fish.
For those unfamiliar with The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Babel Fish is a little creature one puts in their ear to get instant translation of all languages in the universe. Skype Translator makes similar claims, only it involves a collaboration between the Microsoft Machine Translation and Skype teams, not actual creatures.
A conference demo involved a conversation between Skype president Gurdeep Pall and a German-speaking Microsoft employee. The app provided near-instantaneous translations in both written and oral form, all within the familiar Skype interface.
