Gartner: 2011 PaaS Revenue to Total $707.4 Million

Gartner reports PaaS revenues will reach $707.4M in 2011, up from $512.4M in 2010-- and should grow to reach $1.8 billion in 2015.

While early PaaS offerings primarily supported application server capability, the market now also covers integration, process management and portal and managed file transfers (MFTs) and is set to challenge both lower and (eventually) upper ends of portal, application server and business process management (BPM) markets.

Oracle Tools Go Cloud-High

Oracle software tools go on the cloud-- or rather on the Oracle Public Cloud, subscription-based online service giving access to Oracle Fusion applications, middleware and database services.

The announcement comes from the closing keynote to Oracle's OpenWorld event as a surprise announcement from CE Larry Ellison, who describes the service as "both software as a service and platform as a service."

Virgin Soars Towards the Cloud

Virgin founder Richard Branson is famous for his world record trips to the clouds on hot-air balloon-- but his Virgin Media Business now goes for cloud computing with a business strategy "banning jargon and giving customers clear advice on how to get the best from the cloud."

Can a cloud fit inside a USB stick? Piston Cloud Computing says it can, fitting a version of open source cloud OS OpenStack inside a "cloud key."

The OpenStack version-- pentOS (Piston Enterprise OS)-- is an enterprise cloud OS focusing on security and easy private cloud operation, using Piston's Null-Tierarchitecture.

Gartner reports "the time is right" for smaller enterprises to move their email services to either cloud-based or SaaS offerings, with 10% of enterprises to start using cloud email and collaboration services (CECS) by 2014. 

The growth towards CECS and SaaS email will be slow-- taking off on 2014, before levelling off in 2020 when usage exceeds 55% of enterprises.
