Strategy Analytics says global 2011 cloud services revenues total $31 billion, and should reach $82BN by 2016 due to growing "significant" spending.

Symantec Acquires LiveOffice

Symantec purchases cloud-based archiving company LiveOffice for $115M-- a purchase bringing a company already integrating technology with the Symantec platform in-house. 

LiveOffice allows customers archive email, communications on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter) and file sharing services (Dropbox and Box.net) through a single cloud-based service. It is already integrated with a number of Symantec products, including Enterprise Vault and the Clearwell eDiscovery platform.

iSuppli: Cloud Server Market to Rise Further

As online storage service use continues to grow, IHS iSuppli predicts the WW cloud server market will "enjoy robust prospects," projecting 2012 shipments will grow by 35% Y-o-Y to reach 874000 units.


In comparison the analyst says 2010 cloud server shipments total 460000 units, while 2011 shipments amount to 647000. 

iSuppli predicts high growth rates (23-30% Y-o-Y) for each of the next 3 years until 2015, when cloud server shipments will reach around 1.8 million units with a CAGR of 31% (for the 2010-2015 period).

OnLive Brings Windows Desktops to iPads

Cloud-based gaming specialist OnLive steps towards the remote desktop market with OnLive Desktop-- a free iPad app providing "instant access" to the Microsoft Office Suite. 

The company claims “OnLive Desktop is the first app to deliver a no-compromise, media-rich Windows desktop experience to iPad, opening up powerful new possibilities for consumers and businesses." Users should be able to view and edit cloud-hosted documents, complete with multi-touch gesture support and high-quality HD video playback.
