HP, Foxconn Team Up in Servers

HP and Foxconn form a joint venture promising to disrupt the traditional hyperscale server market with new cloud-optimised servers "specifically targeting service providers."

HP FoxconnAccording to announcement press release HP will provide the "industry compute leadership and industry-recognized service and support," while Foxconn brings "superior value throughout the supply chain." Either way both companies are big enough to form a serious contender, with combined annual sales of over $200 billion.

Products from the team up will complement the existing ProLiant server portfolio, as well as the upcoming Moonshot lineup.

"With the relentless demands for compute capabilities, customers and partners are rapidly moving to a New Style of IT that requires focused, scalable and high-volume system designs,” HP CEO Meg Whitman says. “This partnership reflects business model innovation in our server business, where the high-volume design and manufacturing expertise of Foxconn, combined with the compute and service leadership of HP, will enable us to deliver a game-changing offering in infrastructure economics.”

The hyperscale server category covers lower-cost x86-based servers providing the compute backbone for large web companies. According to IDC the market is set to grow with a CAGR of 15-20% over the 2013-2018 period.
