Oracle software tools go on the cloud-- or rather on the Oracle Public Cloud, subscription-based online service giving access to Oracle Fusion applications, middleware and database services.
The announcement comes from the closing keynote to Oracle's OpenWorld event as a surprise announcement from CE Larry Ellison, who describes the service as "both software as a service and platform as a service."
The platform (Java Cloud Service) runs on Java, BPOL and XMOL-- which Oracle says makes it easier to take existing Java and Oracle Database applications on the cloud without the need for rewriting code.
Applications to be available on the cloud include Fusion CRM, Fusion HCM, Social Network and Database, with clients able to subscribe to each service separately.
Ellison's keynote was also memorable for digs against rival Salesforce-- describing the Force.com platform as "the roach motel of clouds."
